SEÑOR DE LA AGONÍA
Es el auténtico patrono de Sullana. Esta imagen se encuentra en la iglesia matriz, exactamente, en la columna derecha, entrando por la puerta principal.
Cuentan nuestros abuelos, que en la guerra con Chile, un sargento chileno, de apellido Balmaceda, odiado hasta por sus propios subordinados, llegó a Sullana con la intención de saquear el pueblo. Luego de entrar al pequeño ambiente del local de la municipalidad del entonces distrito de Sullana, al no encontrar nada de valor, los intrusos ocasionaron grandes destrozos. El sargento, endiablado, salió y se dirigió al templo, pensando que encontraría objetos religiosos de valor. Al llegar a la puerta del aposento sagrado, se encontró ante la imagen de Cristo que no era otra sino la imagen del Señor de la Agonía muy venerado por los cargadores y otros devotos de toda condición social. Balmaceda, un hombre rudo y despiadado, casi inhumano, no creía en nada y seguramente no tenía sentimientos religiosos, pero, ante la imagen de Cristo quedó como petrificado. Es probable que antes de embarcarse en la expedición chilena, su madre bendijo su partida ante un crucifico – Hijo actúa con justicia y que Dios te proteja - tal vez le dijo la buena mujer. Balmaceda, al encontrase frente al Cristo del Señor de la Agonía, revivió este lejano recuerdo. En el fondo del corazón tenía un resquicio de amor y bondad, que en ese momento afloró e invadió su ser, y ante la sorpresa de su guarnición, ordenó se rindiera culto a la sagrada imagen. Entraron al templo, estuvieron unos momentos. Nadie supo lo que sucedió, lo cierto que el sargento chileno ordenó a sus soldados la retirada, ante el asombro de algunos pobladores que miraban asustados a la tropa chilena y esperaban lo peor. Una vez que desaparecieron entre el polvoriento arenal, los lugareños entraron al templo, comprobando que todo estaba intacto.
A partir de entonces, cada seis de enero se veneraba al Señor de la Agonía con mayor devoción, convirtiéndose en una festividad popular. En dicha fecha, su imagen era paseada por diferentes calles de Sullana. Llegaba hasta la capilla de la calle San Martín donde hoy existe una plataforma deportiva, allí pasaba la noche. Luego el Señor era llevado hasta las inmediaciones de la hoy plaza Checa para, despues, retornar a la iglesia.
Esta fiesta popular de fervor religioso y espontánea veneración, duraba toda una semana con sus novenas y otras actividades. En la plaza de Armas se concentraban tómbolas, magos de la suerte, vendedores de exquisita comida y dulces, y otras diversiones, coincidiendo con la presencia de comerciantes provenientes de Ecuador, del sur del Perú, de nuestra sierra, que por la época, aún hoy, convergían masivamente en el lugar intercambiando sus productos, para luego seguir su camino. Era una festividad religiosa popular parecida a las que hoy se celebran en otros lugares del Perú, como el Sr. Cautivo, el Sr, de la Buena Muerte de
Chocán, la Virgen de las Mercedes de Paita, por mencionar las más cercanas.
Lamentablemente, a principios de la década del 60, la mentalidad retrógrada de los padres maristas de la época, que hasta en la actualidad dirigen la parroquia, prohibieron que la imagen del Señor de la Agonía sea sacada en procesión, aduciendo que la festividad se había convertido en una fiesta pagana ¿?. Desde entonces, el culto decayó. Por si fuera poco, los padres maristas aceptaron la imposición de los hermanos maristas (colegio Santa Rosa), que en forma interesada impusieron como "patrono" de Sullana al fundador de la orden marista don Marcelino Champagnat a quién le atribuyen un "milagro" en Uruguay, destronando a Cristo del corazón de los sullanenses.
La feligresía no estuvo de acuerdo con esta errada actitud eclesial, avalada por el hoy cuestionado Sr. Cantuarias, sin embargo, ante el temor de la autoridad vertical y autoritaria de la iglesia católica, todos se quedaron callados, convirtiéndose el desacuerdo en un vulgar "raje" y chismes para todos los gustos, que rondaban por la plaza de Armas. En la actualidad, ridículamente, los hermanos maristas, obligando a sus alumnos, “sacan” en procesión por las calles de Sullana, la imagen de su fundador, Champagnat, ante la indiferencia de la feligresía católica.

This popular party of fervor religious and spontaneous adoration, lasted an entire week with its novenas and other activities. Er ist der authentische Chef von Sullana. Dieses Bild ist in der Haupt Kirche genau in der richtigen Säule, das Betreten für die Haupt Tür.
Unsere Großeltern zählen, daß im Krieg mit Chile, ein chilean-Feldwebel, von letztem Namen Balmaceda, der bis für ihre eigenen Untergebenen gehaßt wird, den es zu Sullana mit der Absicht vom Plündern der Stadt ankam. Nach dem Betreten zur kleinen Atmosphäre vom Einheimischen von der Stadtgemeinde vom damaligen Gebiet von Sullana, als sie nichts von Wert fanden, verursachten die Eindringlinge große Zerstörungen. Der Feldwebel, schelmisch, linke und er ging zum Tempel und glaubte, daß er religiöse Gegenstände von Wert finden würde. Als es zur Tür des heiligen Zimmers ankam, war es vor Christus Bild, das nicht ander war, aber das Bild von das Herr von der Qual sehr angebetet durch die Ladeprogramme und ander widmen Sie von total gesellschaftlichem Zustand. Dann von beginnend, Januar sechs wurde zu angebetet das Herr von der Qual mit mehr Hingabe, das Werden ein populäres Fest. In diesem Datum war ihr Bild neben andere Straßen von Sullana gegangen. Es, wo eine Sport-Plattform heute existiert, kam zur Kapelle der Straße San Martin an, dort verbrachte es die Nacht. Dann das Herr es wurde bis die Umgebung des heute tschechischen Quadrates für genommen, später, zur Kirche zurückzukommen.
Diese populäre Partei von Inbrunst religiöse und spontane Anbetung, dauerte eine ganze Woche mit seinen Novenen und anderen Aktivitäten. Im Quadrat von Waffen konzentrierten sie tombolas, Magier des Glückes, Verkäufer von exquisitem Essen und Bonbon, und andere Vergnügen, beim Zusammenfallen mit der Gegenwart von Kaufleuten, die aus Ekuador kommen, von das südlich vom Peru, von unserem Berg das noch heute sie massiv in der Stelle, die ihre Produkte tauscht, für die Zeit zusammenliefen, es hält dann, um ihrer Straße zu folgen.
